The head studies on the left of this important early drawing are connected with Leighton's masterpieces Dante in Exile, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864 and sold at Sotheby's on 19 June 1990, lot 27. The larger head is that of the supercilious onlooker in the right foreground, the smaller that of the figure on the far left, holding what appears to be a peacock pie on a pastry-board on his head.
The drapery study on the right is more difficult to identify. It clearly represents a painter, and was possibly made in preparation for 'The Painted Record', one of Leighton's illustrations to George Elliot's Romola, published in the Cornhill Magazine in December 1862, the painter Piero in this design is similarly dressed, although his pose is different
