Lot Essay

This unpublished panel relates to a large number of versions of the composition produced by Pieter Breughel II and his studio between circa 1615 and 1630. It appears to belong with those executed entirely by the hand of the master thus joining a group of twenty-three versions considered by Klaus Ertz to be autograph (see K. Ertz, catalogue of the exhibition, Pieter Brueghel le Jeune - Jan Breughel l'Ancien, Antwerp, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, 1998, pp. 390-393).
