This picture is by the same hand as the Piazza San Marco and the Piazzetta in a private collection, Paris, attributed to Antonio Joli by Dario Succi in his catalogue of the exhibition Luca Carlevarijs e la veduta veneziana del Settecento (Padua, Palazzo della Ragione, 25 September-26 December 1994, no. 97, illustrated in colour). He considers that picture to be characteristic of the artist's output from his first sojourn in Venice (1732-1742). This dating is supported by the absence of the iron gate at the entrance of the Loggetta, designed by Antonio Gai and installed in 1742. A terminus post quem for this picture can be established by the new pavement of the Piazzetta, designed by Andrea Tirali and finished in 1734.
