Lot Essay

See the note to the preceding lot for details about the probable patron.

The influence of French taste and style on the hand-woven carpets of England during the eighteenth century continued well into the nineteenth. Finer quality carpets, like that offered here and its pair in the preceding lot, were either copied directly from French sources or freely interpreted from the same basic ingredients with flowers in full bloom across rich backgrounds. For a further discussion on Axminster carpets please see the note to lot 127.
