Lot Essay

Godefroy Dester, maître in 1774

This elegant bonheur-du-jour is embellished with delicate floral trellis marquetry, which was employed by Dester and by Mathieu Guillaume Cramer (maître in 1771) on numerous items of furniture. It features on a closely related bonheur-du-jour, stamped by Dester and with oval Sèvres porcelain plaques in the doors, which was formerly in the collection of Lady Eleanor Denison and sold in these Rooms, 29 June 1950, lot 155. The same pattern appears on two similar bonheurs-du-jour by Cramer, one sold from the collection of the Marquis de Biron at Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 9-11 June 1914, lot 366, the other sold by the Executors of the late Mrs Gabrielle Keiller, in these Rooms, 4 July 1996, lot 277.
