Lot Essay

Saint John Nepomucene, a vicar-general of Kladrau was said to have have been put to death by King Wenceslaus IV because he would not divulge the secrets of Queen Johanna's confession. The King who suspected his wife of infedelity and insisted that John tell him the name of her lover was so enraged by John's defence of the law of the Church, that he ordered John to be put to death. John's death was particularly violent, being tortured, lead through the streets of Prague chained with a block of wood in his mouth before being thrown from the Karlsbrucke into the river Moldau on the 20 March 1393.
