FIRST COMPLETE EDITION IN ENGLISH

Ferguson 288, Hill p. 174 'an unabridged translation into English. This edition is usually considered to be the best one in English and is now an extremely rare work'.

La Perouse was the first to navigate and chart the Japan Sea and La Perouse Strait. At Kamchatka he received instructions to monitor British intentions in Australia. He sailed for New South Wales via Samoa, where he discovered the islands of Savaii, Manono, and Apolima in 1787. He reached Botany Bay in January 1788, hours after Governor Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet. The final documents used in compiling this work were forwarded to France by Governor Phillip. The plates include 20 double page folding maps, views of the Phillipines, Easter Island, the North West Coast of America, ornithology. La Perouse's expedition left Botany Bay and was never seen again.
