Turnbull was business manager of an English expedition which set out, on the Margaret, to observe the fur trade on the North-West coast of America. On his lengthy travels he obtained much interesting information on the Soceity, Tonga and the Hawaiian Islands, discovering the islands of Margaret, Phillips and Holt in the Tuamotu Archipelago.
