Lot Essay

The German sculptor Fritz Schulze studied at the Copenhagen Academy between 1856 and 1863 and spent 1864 in Rome. He eventually settled in Munich where he died. He specialised in classical and historical figures and groups, and this particular group, executed and cast in Rome, unusually uses a piece of porphyry as part of the composition. It is tempting to think that it was once part of a Roman building re-used by Schulze
