Lot Essay

The arms are those of Wyndham, for Sir George O'Brien Wyndham, third Earl of Egremont (1751-1837), patron of fine art; member of Board of Agriculture 1793; Lord Lieutenant of Sussex 1819-1835; stockbreeder at Petworth and patron of art; one of the first to appreciate Turner, who had a studio at Petworth. Among the artists he patronised were Benjamin Robert Haydon, John Flaxman, Joseph Nollekens; John Charles Felix Rossi and John Constable
