The design of the splat for this set of chairs is similar to that illustrated in Thomas Sheraton, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1783, part II, pl. XXVI. While the central pierced splat, with its acanthus-leaf spray, terminating in further foliage, features as pl. 8, no. 6, 'intended for a parlour chair', the side supports with the fan motif, relate to pl. 8, no. 2.
A set of eight similar mahogany dining-chairs was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 25 February 1994, lot 111, and a further set of six similar mahogany armchairs was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 23 April 1988, lot 116.
