BACK, George (1796-1878). Autograph letter signed ("Geo Back") to Sir John Richardson (1787-1865), [London], 10 February 1836. 1½ pages, 4to, in good condition.
THE EXPLORER BACK WRITES TO A MEMBER OF HIS EXPEDITION TO GREAT SLAVE LAKE. "Fitton's letter and your Paper were read the other night and exerted much attention and from no one more than myself as you had not dropt a hint about it when last I saw you. A Committee of which you for one is appointed to consider and determine what shall be finally recommended to Government, though nothing can be done until Parry's arrival in Town, who is also one of the party." Fitton is the geologist William Henry Fitton (1780-1861), whose "Geological notice on the new country passed over by Captain Back during his late expedition" was published in the same year as this letter as part of Back's Narrative of the Arctic Land Expedition. In this same work was Richardson's "Zoological Remarks," which is most probably the paper to which Back refers. Fitton's and Richardson's papers describe discoveries made during Captain Back's arctic land expedition of 1833-35. Parry had at this time retired from active exploration.
