THE GRIM AFTERMATH OF CHANCELLORSVILLE: A UNIQUE VIRGINIA BROADSIDE.
A unique broadside (a photocopy of this copy is the basis of the listing in Hummel, Southeastern Broadsides Before 1877), recording--for a single Virginia regiment--the terrible toll of the four bloody days' battle at Chancellorsville, May 1-4. Tactically regarded as Lee's most perfect campaign, the victory was largely Pyrrhic, since it entailed the loss of the brilliant Stonewall Jackson and heavy casualties sustained by many veteran units, like the 10th Virginia. The Rockingham Register Extra, quite obviously set in type and printed in great haste, was no doubt issued to inform local residents of the fate of their family members and neighbors serving in the Army of Northern Virginia. Beneath the heading, Moffett explains that "the following list comprises all the casualties that I have been able to obtain, up to this time." The list is carefully arranged by companies, and each officer or enlisted man is listed with a short label: "killed," "prisoner," "wounded," "badly wounded," "severly wounded," or "slightly wounded;" in the case of company B, it adds the note "five or six others, wounded slightly."
