Each with a seated sphinx with headdress and foliage-decorated saddle-cloth with zig-zag border, on a concave moulded stepped rectangular base, the rectangular pedestal with fluted sides on a stepped moulded base, one tail replaced in stone composition, one with both breasts repaired with lead

Lot Essay

The sphinx, protector of Arcadia, is designed in the Louis XIV manner with Egyptian headdress. There is a related sphinx on Robert Adam's bridge at Compton Verney, Warwickshire, circa 1760-65, illustrated in C. Hussey, English Country Houses, Mid Georgian 1760-1800, London, 1952, fig. 2.
