1967 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER SHADOW SALOON
EU registered
Chassis No. SRX 3158
Engine No. 3158
Garnet with beige hide interior
Engine: V8 overhead valve, cast aluminium alloy crankcase and cylinder heads, 6,750cc; Gearbox: three speed automatic with torque converter; Brakes: disc brakes all round; Suspension: fully independent with automatic hydraulic height control system. Left hand drive.
The first cars built by Rolls-Royce with monocoque construction were the Silver Shadow and T-Series Bentley. The conventional chassis frame was replaced by a front sub assembly and a rear sub assembly for the back axle and suspension. Power was from the 6.2 litre, 8 cylinder, light alloy engine whilst other features such as hydraulic disc brakes and an improved power-assisted steering system ensured that the new model was mechanically very up to date. Although the car did not have any sporting pretensions it was still quite swift and, as always, accommodated four passengers in great comfort and style.
This example was delivered new in October 1967 to Hoffman Electronics Corp. in California, where it was to remain in this excellent dry climate until it was acquired by its current owner in April 1993. The car was originally shipped on the 'Pacific Stronghold', from Glasgow, fitted with Firestone whitewall tyres, Britax safety harnesses and a Motorola radio. Having purchased an immaculate and original example with one previously recorded owner, the new custodian decided to undertake a bare metal respray in the original RR garnet colour scheme, which had slightly faded under the California sun, however retaining the lovely original interior. A complete mechanical rebuild was also carried out, including, the hydraulics, suspension, gearbox, brakes and air conditioning unit to just mention a fraction of the work carried out for a cost of around €60,0 0 Ero0. The car has been carefully but regularly used since and only taken out on high days and holidays and is showing a mere 56,000miles on the odometer, which is believed to be the original mileage covered from new. On a recent test drive by a member of Christie's staff the car behaved impeccably, with no untoward noises from the suspension, and the power steering operated as it should. In fact it ran as close as possible to a car that had just left the works. These top-of-the-range motor cars offer exceptional value for money when one considers the price of a more mundane family saloon and in this case the no expense spared quality work that has been carried out. An early example of this still undervalued model of RR that warrants close inspection and that is accompanied by a copy of its original RR build-sheets.
