Lot Essay

Arnold Houbraken states that the Utrecht painter Johannes van der Meer (c. 1640-after 1682) 'travelled to Rome in the company of Lieve Verschuier' in about 1655.

A similar, large fragment of a classical bas-relief, propped up on the sea shore, occurs in the picture by Verschuier in the Institut Néerlandais, Paris.
