Lot Essay

A picture in the Mao Museum, Japan, is regarded by all but one of the members of the Rembrandt Research Project team as the autograph original of this self-portrait type (J. Bruyn, B. Haak, S.H. Levie, P.J.J. van Thiel and E. van der Wetering, with the collaboration of L. Peese Binkhorst-Hoffscholte, A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, I, 1625-1631, 1982, p. 232, fig. 1).
