Bunches of Grapes in a Basket on a partly draped Table

Wouter Mertens is recorded as having held office in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1641-2. Other still lifes by the artist, all signed 'W.Mertens', and comparable to the present painting in terms of the treatment of grapes in baskets, were sold in these Rooms, 25 March 1977, lot 39, 4 May 1979, lot 23 and 8 July 1983, lot 69.
