Lot Essay
Fechhelm was a member of the Academy in Berlin, best-known for his views and rural landscapes (F. Schlie, Beschreibendes Verzeichnis der Werke im Museum von Schwerin, Schwerin, 1882, p. 178).
The present picture shows Berlin in 1781, viewed from the south-east, just eighteen years after the end of the Seven Years War. The following buildings are depicted (left to right): the Dreifaltigkeitskirche (built in 1737); the Bethlehemskirche (also known as the Böhmische kirche, 1737); the Hedwigskathedrale (1773) with the larger and smaller domes adjacent to each other; the Sophienkirche (1732-4) with its high bell-tower; the Berliner Schloss and the Berliner Dom (1747-50); the Jerusalemkirche (1747), the tower replaced in 1838 with a new one by Schinkel; the Marienkirche; the Petrikirche (begun in 1731) with the Sankt Nicolaikirche behind; then the towers of the Georgenkirche, the Parochialkirche and the Weisenhauskirche.
