Lot Essay

The present picture may be compared with other still lifes by the artist at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rheims (M. Faré, La vie silencieuse en France: la nature morte au XVIIème siècle, Paris, 1976, pp. 331-2, figs. 533-7). More customarily known for his portraits and miniatures, Faré notes the 'talent sensible à l'harmonie coloriée des fruits, disposés, avec autant de goût' that characterizes Salbreux's work in this genre.
