Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1961
Rhône. Domaine-bottled: Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Very damp-soiled label. Excellent level: 2cms below base of cork

Tasting note: Robert Mayberry's pioneering (now very rare) book "Wines of the Rhône Valley - A Guide to Origins" (Rowman & Littlefield, New Jersey 1987) has a fine description of this famous wine "whose balanced concentration does not preclude a certain softness. With age come spices, increasing tarriness, truffles, salt, and a wet seaside and sand sort of rotteness still founded on ripe fruit that makes years like 1961 in their maturity resemble Pomerol." This is certainly mature, but shows no signs of deterioration. It is surely one of the greatest Hermitages made in the last century. A.H.
