Lot Essay

The present picture is a version of the well known panel in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The Vienna panel was attributed, when in the collection of King Charles I, to Andrea del Sarto and subsequently to Pontormo and Bugiardini, before being given to Franciabigio by Phillips in an 1896 sale catalogue (S. Regan McKillop, Franciabigio, Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1974, pp. 158-9, fig. 74). More recently the Vienna picture has been assigned to Jacopo da Indaco.
