Lot Essay

The prototype is a tondo in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (14.40.635), traditionally attributed to Mainardi but now recognized as a work by Domenico Ghirlandaio. The composition is also known from a tondo in the Cini Collection (for which, see L. Venturi, in the catalogue of the exhibition Maestri e botteghe: pittura alla fine del quattrocento, Florence, 1993, p. 250, no. 9.12).

We are grateful to Everett Fahy for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
