A walnut and marquetry longcase clock
The case with moulded swan neck cresting centred by an inlaid shell, with floral inlay below, the chamfered front angles with inlaid mock pilasters, with conforming half columns to the rear and and glazed panels to the sides, convex throat mouldings to the trunk, chevron inlay to the chamfered angles flanking a trunk door with conforming inlay and central burr panel, with marquetry above depicting two clowns, on plinth (shortened, with later base) also inlaid with chevron borders and with central burr panel, the 13in. wide cut away brass dial with cherub and coronet spandrels and engraved border to the 3in. wide silvered chapter ring signed Barnaby Matthews DUBLIN, with half hour and half quarter hour markers, matted centre with engraved inner border, silvered seconds ring, date aperture and ringed winding holes, later black painted hands, with later moon in later arch above, the four pillar rack striking movement with anchor escapement; associated, case second quarter 18th century and with adaptations and restorations, dial and movement first quarter 18th century and with adaptations -- 97½in. (247.5cm.) high
