One of the most exclusive coupes of its time, the 280 SE Mercedes-Benz provided a fascinating combination of great luxury and effortless high performance for up to five fortunate occupants. To create it in 1969, the company took their latest S-Class chassis platform, installed in it a magnificent brand-new overhead camshaft 3.5 litre V8 powerplant, with advanced fuel injection and ignition systems, then clad the result with a svelte two-door bodyshell. The resulting confection, still identified as a '280' despite the 3.5 litre engine, was capable of 127 mph. With power steering, electric windows, automatic transmission and air conditioning, it was equipped to the highest level possible in 1971 and built to exceptionally demanding quality standards. Expensive to manufacture and priced accordingly, the 280 SE fixed-head coupes and cabriolets were always rare and quickly acquired a special prestige that has never deserted them. By the time they gave way in 1971 to new Mercedes-Benz coupes aimed at broader markets, no more than just over 4500 had left the factory, of which 3270 were coupes.
This 280 SE 3.5 Litre Coupé, carries a speedometer in kilometers signifying original supply to the home (Continental) market. The car has at some stage received a respray and possibly refurbishment of the interior, but underneath appears to be original and commensurate with its age.
The present condition of the engine bay and other areas does not suggest that it has been mechanically restored, and Christie's has not had the opportunity to start or run the car. Owing to the complicated nature of the fuel-injected engine and other mechanics, we would advise that it be professionally serviced prior to being run or used.
