Further details
John Martin's magnificent large scale mezzotints are the most impressive original works ever to be produced in the soft steel medium and are amongst the most powerful and spectacular of the period. This early example lacks the lion like animal found standing in the mouth of the cave to the right side of the image and has the small vertical finger of rock projecting from the waves to the left of the mid-ground rock formations. The absence of the lion is only found in the earliest impressions.
