Sailor, with white rear fetlock, is on the left, and faces Lottery, with Jerry standing, between the two and facing the distant countryside. They ran in steeplechases at St Albans and Barnet but their best claim to fame was as runners in the Grand Nationals during the period 1839-1843.Lottery won the first Liverpool Grand National on 24 February 1839, ridden by Jem Mason. He went on to win the Cheltenham Steeplechase the following year when Jerry won the Grand National. After their racing days these chasers were familiar figures in the hunting field in Hertfordshire and Lottery became famous for a parlour trick of leaping over a fully laden luncheon table set up in the garden
