Painted in blue and yellow with an embracing courtier and companion flanked by flowering plants (slight chips to footrim and handle), later hinged pewter cover with mermaid thumbpiece

Lot Essay

The same subject occurs on a squat jug now in the Hetjens-museum, Düsseldorf, illustrated by Otto Reisebieter, Die deutschen Fayencen des 17. und 18 Jahrhunderts (1921), fig. 16. Other pieces with this subject are in the Frankfurt Historisches Museum and in Hanau.
