Historia Belgica, Frankfurt: Sigismund Feyerabend, 1583. 8°, title with printer's device (small hole to title and some staining, some localised marginal worming, browned), contemporary vellum, arms of Cardinal Barberini stamped in gilt on covers, a bee at each corner, bee motif stamped in gilt in compartments, spine titled in manuscript, g.e., illegible early inscription at foot of title, occasional early marginalia. The Barberinis were a Tuscan family that acquired wealth by trade in the 16th century and rose to the front rank of Roman nobility on the elevation of Maffeo Barberini to Pope Urban VIII in 1623. His brother Antonio was made a cardinal and his nephew, Francesco (1597-1679) was also a cardinal and vice chancellor, and founded the Barberini Library. The power and ambition of the family led to the defeat of the papal troops by neighbouring princes led by the Duke of Parma. They fled to France but returned in 1652.
