The Barberinis were a Tuscan family that acquired wealth by trade in the 16th century and rose to the front rank of Roman nobility on the elevation of Maffeo Barberini to Pope Urban VIII in 1623. His brother Antonio was made a cardinal and his nephew, Francesco (1597-1679) was also a cardinal and vice chancellor, and founded the Barberini Library. The power and ambition of the family led to the defeat of the papal troops by neighbouring princes led by the Duke of Parma. They fled to France but returned in 1652.
