Luis Ponce de León (1527-91) was a Spanish poet and mystic. He entered Salamanca University at the age of fourteen. In 1544 he joined the Augustinian Order and became Professor of Theology at Salamanca in 1561. He was denounced at the Inquisition for his translation of the book of Canticles and for criticizing the text of the Vulgate, imprisoned at Valladolid from 1572-76, and released with an admonition.
He translated the works of Euripides, Pindar, Virgil and Horace, and is regarded as among the greatest of the Spanish lyrical poets for his original works which include De la vida del cielo and A Salinas. La Perfeta Casada was first published in 1583 and was the most popular of his prose works.
