The second and most complete edition of Vecellio's encyclopedia of costumes, expanded from the first edition of 1590, contains 87 more subjects than the first edition, including 20 of American costumes (Peruvian, Mexican, Virginian and Florida Indians). Cesare Vecellio (1530-1606) was a nephew and pupil of Titian and, it is thought, was assisted by him in the design of the illustrations. The blocks were cut by Cristoforo Chrieger. Many of the subjects appear to be based on manuscript or printed sources, for example those of Nicolas de Nicolay and Pieter de Coeck.
