RARE CALIFORNIA WINES
The selection of California wines to be sold from the Josey cellar reflects Mr Josey's early interest in California classics from the 1950's and 1960's, and a more recent interest in the renaissance of California Cabernet-based wines in the 1990's, led by the so-called "cults". FH
Inglenook Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon--Vintage 1897
Napa Valley
Level: 6.0cm; handwritten strip label, cracked wax capsule; ex Huelein
Provenance: From the private cellar of Mr John Daniel, the grandson of Capt. Gustave Niebaum, the founder of Inglenook, sold at the Huelein Auction of "Great Wine Masterpieces" in San Francisco, May 1971.
Selections of old Inglenook vintages appeared at the regular annual Heublein wine auctions held throughout the United States from 1969 to the early 1980's. I was privileged to conduct these sales and, with Sandy McNally, presided at the remarkable pre-sale tastings. Unquestionably, these were the major annual wine events of a burgeoning period.
I had the opportunity of tasting this pre-sale in 1971 and 1979. Its still retained depth of colour; nose old but holding well; drying out, but more than a historic relic.
Extremely rare. MB
