Heitz Cellars, Martha's Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon--Vintage 1974
Napa Valley
Level: into neck
If I had to bring one bottle to a classic California Cabernet blind tasting challenge, Heitz Martha's 1974 would be the wine. Many friends have been equally enthusiastic about their recent tastings of this wine. My last note is from a tasting outside Philadelphia in October 1999. The wine was black purple in color, with an absolutely gorgeous fresh minty nose with aromas of buttery ripe currants, with a slight hint of damp earth (or "funk") which added complexity and dare I say, intrigue. Intense currants and peppery tannins dominated the flavors, which never faded during the course of a long, tannic, and alcoholic finish. An outstanding wine. FH
