Terrantez "H.M.B."--1862
H.M. Borges
Level: bottom neck; stencilled bottle with embossed Avery label.
In my opinion one of, perhaps, the most magnificent of all old Madeiras. The Company was established in 1877 and, in connoisseur's eyes, was most famous for its collection of old vintages. This particular wine was acquired by Mr. Henriques Borges from T.T. de Camara Lomelino, successors to Robert Leal, then by Dr. Grabham, thence to Gazelee and via Avery's to a former Hon. Secretary of the Saintsbury Club whose cellar was sold at Christie's 24 June 1976. I have tasted this wine on half a dozen occasions and have one treasured bottle left. It has a warm, glowing amber colour with gold highlights (try it by candlelight); an overwhelmingly exotic bouquet that fills the room; still fairly sweet, richness sharing power with intensity, delicacy and fragrance. Boundless length, perfect acidity. MB
