BORDEAUX
Claret, red Bordeaux, was the first wine to appear in a Christie catalogue; it featured in James Christie's inaugural sale on behalf of a "Nobleman deceas'd", a four day auction which began on 5 December 1766. Bordeaux has dominated the wine auction scene ever since, with good reason : quality and longevity. Despite increasing competition, Bordeaux remains the largest and most important wine district, producing both reds and whites of unassailable quality.

Many wines have the basic structure to keep, but the finest Bordeaux not only keep well but - and this is the crucial point - benefit from bottle age, subtly changing colour, developing nuances of bouquet and flavour.

There are very simple and human reasons, for so much Lafite and other fine clarets remaining in old English and Scottish cellars; the best was kept for last; and even wealthy and otherwise generous hosts did not feel inclined to draw the corks and open great wines for a large dinner party when few of their guests would actually appreciate the wine. Sadly - but not for us - the original owner died, leaving unconsumed treasures.

Between the foundation of a new specialist wine department in 1966 and the late 1970's, Christie's "unearthed" and sold some of the most famous cellars ever to come on to the market.

Lenoir Josey had the good fortune to take advantage of many of Christie's most famous wine auctions, and many of his great claret purchases, immaculately cellared, and appropriately described, are in the present sale. MB
