Details
Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1868
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Level: into neck; recorked, capsuled, and labelled by the Maître de Chai of Château Lafite in 1992
Provenance: an important cellar in Paris, sold at Christie's, 27 September 1979.
1868 was a good vintage. Despite heavy rain in August, it was hot before and after and the harvest was unusually early. Less well known is the fact that the run of good vintages and heavy demand for the first growths reached its zenith in 1868. Thereafter, despite excellent vintages, the overheated market deterred traditional claret buyers, first the Scottish, then the English, and prices began to fall.
Tasting note: Lafite 1868 with original capsule, cork and excellent level tasted only once, in 1988. Not a big wine it opened up beautifully well and held well. Good wine. MB
