Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1870
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Levels: into neck; recorked, capsuled and labelled by the Château in 1992
Originally bottled by J.L.Pfungst, a leading shipper of Bordeaux and Champagne of the period. At the time of the sale it had the shipper's capsule, cork branded "J.L.Pfungst Vintage 1870."
Provenance: Sir John Thompson's cellar at Woodperry House, Oxfordshire, sold at Christie's December 1976.

This was another of Christie's great "pristine" cellar sales.
Removed from Bin 20. Cellar book entry "1870 vintage too big and too dear ...... laid down in March 1874 ..... great future." Sir John's grandfather paid 75 shillings per dozen for the bottles of 1870 Lafite. The price of the magnums was not recorded.
1870 was, of course, one of the greatest of all pre-phylloxera vintages, and of which I have been privileged to taste on fifteen occasions including a bottle from Woodperry House, purchased by Lenoir Josey and served at a dinner party I attended in October 1978. It was in perfect condition. MB
