Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1874
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
All levels into neck; re-corked, capsuled, and labelled by the Château in 1992
One of the most prolific of pre-phylloxera vintages.
Provenance: Woodperry House cellar, sold at Christie's December 1976.
Woodperry House was built in 1730. The cellars beneath were divided into three sections, Sir John Thompson's grandfather filling the two back sections in 1868, the year he started his cellarbook. In it he recorded "Bin XXXII, Claret-Lafite 1874 - 1 hogshead - 22 dozen 11" purchased from Wicks for @100 "le tout première qualité (sic) bottled at the château, full brand on corks "Laid in July 1877" .............. "moved owing to dampness to bin XXXIII August 7 1882" by Mr. Thompson and his butler. In order to dry out the bottles they put sawdust over each layer of bottles.
Of the 22 dozen binned over 11 dozen remained, 132 bottles being sold in 1976. My pre-sale tasting note : "lovely colour; gentle, fragrant, cedar like bouquet, not a trace of decay; fairly light but with a rich and magnificent flavour and long finish. A perfect specimen !" MB
