Echézeaux--Vintage 1985
Côte de Nuits, Jayer-Gilles
Dampstained labels, five nicked; three corroded capsules and two with signs of seepage
This is regularly the best bottle in the cellar of Robert Jayer-Gilles, whose estate is in the Hautes Côtes, above the Côte de Nuits. Jayer-Gilles is a firm advocate of maximum use of new oak, which can drown the personality of his lesser wines. His Echézeaux, however, has the essential character and concentration to justify 100 new oak ageing. AH
