Lot Essay

The thistle cup is a typically Scottish form of drinking vessel and Andrew Law is recorded by Ian Finlay in Scottish Gold and Silver Work as producing an early example dated 1682 in the Bute collection and two dated 1685 with the George Heriot Trust.
