Lot Essay

The beautiful Sarah Jennings was an attendant and friend to Princess, later Queen Anne when she clandestinely married John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough in 1677. In 1682 she was made Lady of the Bedchamber to Anne. After her husband's death in 1722 Sarah spent the rest of her life completing the palace at Blenheim.

Louise de Kéroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth (1649-1734) was a French courtesan and mistress of Charles II of Britain. She was ennobled in 1673 and her son became Duke of Richmond.
