Lot Essay

Maria Theresia, Holy Roman Empress marrried Francis I in 1736. On her father's death in 1740 she became Queen of Austria, and Bohemia, and Archduchess of Austria. She had ten surviving children including Joseph II, who succeeded her; Leopold, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who succeeded his brother as Leopold II; Ferdinand, who became Duke of Modena; and Marie Antoinette who married Louis XVI and became Queen of France.
