Lot Essay

In the Spring of 1959 Margot Fonteyn became embroiled in her husband's plans for a revolution in Panama. On board a little launch Nola Margot and Tito set off on a five day 'fishing trip', and under the cover of darkness, assembled eight rebels and smuggled guns on a shrimp boat called Elaine. One night, Tito left with the rebels in the shrimp boat, and Fonteyn remained on the launch for a day, cruising the islands as a decoy. On her return to Panama, she was arrested, gaoled for a night and then deported to Miami. Five days later she received word that Tito had taken political asylum in the Brazilian Embassy.
