Dame Ninette de Valois
A collection of material relating to Dame Ninette de Valois including: a pink satin ballet shoe by Nicolini Romeo, Milan, the soles stamped with manufacturer's details and size 12, additionally inscribed in in an unidentified hand in black ink Ninette de Valois shoe in "Douane", signed and inscribed inside in black ink Margot, With Love Ninette de Valois 1934, with yellow satin ribbons attached (well worn); accompanied by a note in an unidentified hand confirming the provenance and a recent newspaper clipping featuring a photograph of de Valois with Robert Helpmann performing Douane in 1932; two black and white portrait photographs of de Valois, one by Anthony, signed by the photographer in blue ink in the margin, additionally signed and inscribed in black ink With Love - Ninette de Valois, 1939 -- 10x7½in. (25.4x19cm.) the other by Germaine Kanova, signed on the mount in pencil by the photographer, additionally signed and inscribed on the mount in blue ink Margot, with my love N. d V., 1947 -- 13x10in. (33x25.4cm.); and a collection of correspondence including sixteen letters, the majority from de Valois to Margot Fonteyn, some also addressed to Tito, 1950s - 1970s, all signed "Madam", some on Royal Opera House headed stationery, some with corresponding envelopes, including:
-- an autograph letter, signed to Fonteyn's mother [n.d. but 1934], regarding her daughter's stage name, commenting ...How strange! one hour before I got your letter I had said...that Peggy's theatrical fortune was too "rosy" to go through, unless she met the occasion by changing her name! You are quite right. I will see the other name is used... 1p.;
-- an autograph letter, signed, 16th August, 1958, telling her of travel plans to Washington for a lecture and telling her of a meeting with H.R.H. Princess Margaret...I love the Princess...She is so charming in small parties - & so intelligent... 1p.
-- an autograph letter, signed, 29th April, 1960, to Dearest Margo, thanking her for her help....Again I offer my apology.....for my personal reaction to the new pas de deux...I just don't find it worthy of any one of you... (I love you in the Sylvia costume!).. 1p.
-- an autograph letter, signed, [n.d. but 7th December, 1960?], To Dearest Margot & Tito....I am happy for you both that all is again "normal"...meanwhile all "Boards" are going to have a fairly bad time as I am on strike about overworked comapnies. Life is difficult - & in many ways an ungrateful pastime! 1p.
-- an autograph letter, signed, [n.d. but 17th February, 1960], thanking her for a telegram and suggesting they meet for lunch to discuss....the future. or rather as much of the future as you can see - Can I lunch with you or would you prefer to lunch somewhere with me ? I fear you are too well known for the latter... 1p.
-- an autograph letter, signed, [n.d. but 8th January, 1964], thanking her for a speech she had given as...quite beautiful...one that I shall much treasure in the future....As for the "delivery", like all you do the quality was flawless... 1p.
-- an autograph letter, signed, [n.d.], addressed to Dear Both of You.. thanking them for a memento they had sent her ..Margot now stands for me as a part of our ballet's golden age. She & it will always be with me for what is left of my life.... 1p.
-- an autograph letter, signed, 1st December, 1972....It is lovely [probably referring to a photograph Fonteyn had sent her]...& has that quality that hit me in the eye all those years ago when I first saw you in class...It has something that none of your contemporaries ever had. I love to have "it" in a photograph that is nothing to do with attitude or arabesques !... 2pp.
-- an autograph letter, signed, 2nd January, 1975, thanking her for a Christmas gift....You looked enchanting & spoke beautifully at the Royal Society of Arts dinner...1p.
-- an autograph letter, signed, 24th September, 1979....Now you are moving so successfully into another phase of the dance world I would like to talk to you over many aspects of it. I am greatly looking forward to our film - & feel sure it will be very important...1p.; and
-- an autograph letter, signed, 29th December, 1979, thanking her for a gift.....I loved the film.....You came across splendidly & improved as the film developed... 1p.; and
a birthday card decorated with pressed flowers inscribed Dearest Margot - for all those years of perfection - a tiny souvenir on this our birthday - Ninette de Valois, May 5th 1956; and
