Lot Essay

The present watercolour was executed from the Stonehouse Bridge, depicted in a watercolour of the opposite view, illustrated in D. Japes, William Payne: A Plymouth Experience, Exeter, 1992, pl. 33. The present watercolour similarly combines marine and litoral elements, portraying two windswept figures conversing at the stormy water's edge. Stonehouse remained a favourite subject for Payne, who painted in Devon between 1790 and 1800.
Two views of the Stonehouse, Plymouth were sold at Christie's London, 8 April 1997, lot 36 (£1,955) and lot 37 (£2,760).
