Williams' extended tour of Italy and Greece finished in 1818. The watercolours, from his journey which established his reputation were exhibited in 1822.
The School of Homer is, however, one place that Williams did not actually visit. 'We remained only three days in Ithica [sic]; and except Homer's school, we saw all the antiquities worthy of notice in the island.' (see H.W. Williams, Travels in Italy Greece and the Ionian Islands, Edinburgh, 1820, p. 202). The present watercolour must therefore have been inspired by a drawing by a fellow artist such as Charles Robert Cockerell, R.A. (1788-1863).
