Clackmannan Tower stands on a commanding hill in relatively flat country beside the Firth of Forth, on the edge of the little town of the same name that serves as county capital of Scotland's smallest shire. The tower was in the possession of the Bruces of Clackmannanshire who lived there until the end of the eighteenth century. (The Bruces were a bastard line, related to the Royal House, who received the tower from David II, son of Robert Bruce, in 1359). Clackmannan Tower is one of the best preserved 'keeps' in Scotland.
