Huet also befriended literary figures such as Victor Hugo and Lamartine, and artists such as Barye. Of these it was Delacroix who became his closest friend. In the early part of his career, Huet sought inspiration in Normandy, around Les Andelys, and in the Mont d'Auvergne, as well as in the forest of Fontainebleau and around Paris. Often in poor health, Paul Huet favoured working in watercolour which was less demanding than oil painting. He spent the last ten years of his life at Chaville near Paris, where he bought a cottage.
