This previously unrecorded portrait is a fine and characteristic example of the artist's work in the early 1660s. It is difficult to reconcile the sitter, traditionally identified as Miss Wharton, with any of the daughters of Philip, 4th Lord Wharton (1613-1695/6). It is posssible she may have been the daughter of the Mr. Wharton and Mrs. Wharton painted by Lely (see R.B. Beckett, Lely, London, 1951, p.65, nos. 562-3).
