Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild formed a highly personal and deeply informed collection which concentrated almost exclusively on the 18th Century. The collection comprised paintings, drawings, prints, furniture, bronzes, silver, tapestries, silks, jewellery and an important collection of porcelain. Several pieces were inherited from Mathilde von Rothschild of the Frankfurt branch and also from Ferdinand de Rothschild of London. In his house in Berlin's Tiergartenstraße, each object was carefully integrated into a rich decorative scheme, yet was able to stand alone on individual merit. The 1931 sale catalogue is a record of the quality of the collection, epitomising le goût Rothschild.
